It was Day 2 of the E3 press conferences in the morning when Nintendo took the stage. As the lights dim, a video history of the past 25 years of The Legend of Zelda plays with an orchestra setting the mood, playing a mash-up of stunning and beautiful ballads that we are all very familiar with. After some new Zelda title announcements, we have Nintendo’s Global President, Satoru Iwata, come out hinting at the new console, only for him to drop the subject stating that it would come up later in their show. Hearts drop, but the filler between the big reveal and then definitely was not short lived. Reggie Fils-Aime, President of Nintendo America, takes center stage to tell us of all the new titles that will be coming out later this year for the Nintendo 3DS, such as Kid Icarus, a new Super Mario title, Mario Kart 3DS, Star Fox 64 3DS, Luigi’s Mansion 2, and many others.

After everything was said and done with the 3DS, he proceeds to talk about the Wii and its name’s origin. Wii was meant to signify that the console has something to offer for everyone…something that “we” can all play. But now comes a time for something for all of us and for the core solo gamers out there. Many people had been missing the hardcore single player games they were use to with all the previous consoles, so Nintendo obliged them with the reveal of the Wii U.

New Nintendo console, Wii U.

This console is the 6th generation of the brilliant Nintendo systems. It has a single self-loading media bay that will play 12-centimeter proprietary high-density optical discs for the new consoles games, as well as the 12-centimeter optical discs that the Wii games use. Its video output supports everything from 480i and 480p all the way to 1080i and 1080p (That’s right! The first ever Nintendo HD console!). The cables that are compatible for video output on the back of the console are standard composite and s-video cables(RCA and S-Video), component cables (RGB), and HDMI. Its audio uses AV Multi Out connector, as well as the Six-channel PCM linear output provided through HDMI. The console will also have an internal flash memory of up to 8 GB, and the option to expand its memory storage using either a SD memory card, or an external USB hard disk drive. Its CPU is powered by an IBM multi-core processor. A few other notable things is that it has four USB connector slots, and it is backwards compatible with all Wii games and Wii accessories.

The new controller it’s biggest feature, almost appearing and mocking a tablet. Its 6.2″, 16:9 wide touch screen is truly amazing. Game play can now be switched up in games completely, allowing a gamer to choose their preferred method of play. You can change feed from the TV directly to your controller and play using the new touch screen as your own personal monitor as it if were a handheld gaming device. Or, you could use the controller as your inventory screen while you hack and slash your way through legion of evil-doers while never having to go to a pause screen or equip menu to change gear. It seems like such an amazing and awesome concept with so many new innovative ways to do things! Other features on the controller include 2 analog controllers (similar to the design of the 3DS’ analog stick), a camera and sensor bar located above the screen, a d-pad, abyx buttons, select button, home button, + start button, and a small microphone at the bottom, 2 stereo speakers, a battery light and power button, and a L, ZL, R, and ZR buttons, making up 4 shoulder buttons. It is also rechargeable, rumbles, comes with a stylus, and has a built in accelerometer and gyroscope.

So are we excited? You bet we are! We can not wait to get our hands on this thing and to find out even more information as its released. But I feel like there is something missing…oh yeah, the games! But, that will have to wait for another day.
